La madre de las tortugas

Veintidós siglos antes de la era cristiana, el justo emperador Yü el Grande recorrió y midió con sus pasos las Nueve Montañas, los Nueve Ríos y los Nueve Pantanos y dividió la Tierra en Nueve Regiones, aptas para la virtud y la agricultura. Sujetó así las Aguas que amenazaban inundar el Cielo y la Tierra; los historiadores refieren que la división que impuso al mundo de los hombres le fue revelada por una Tortuga sobrenatural o angelical que salió de un arroyo. Hay quien afirma que este reptil, Madre de todas las Tortugas, estaba hecho de agua y de fuego; otros le atribuyen una sustancia harto menos común: la luz de las estrellas que forman la constelación del Sagitario. En el lomo se leía un tratado cósmico titulado el Hong Fan (Regla General) o un diagrama de las Nueve Subdivisiones de ese tratado, hecho de puntos blancos y negros.

Para los chinos, el Cielo es hemisférico y la Tierra es cuadrangular; por ello descubren en las tortugas una imagen o modelo del universo. Las tortugas participan, por lo demás, de la longevidad de lo cósmico; es natural que las incluyan entre los animales espirituales (junto al unicornio, al dragón, al fénix y al tigre) y que los augures busquen presagios en su caparazón.

Than-Qui (tortuga-genio) es el nombre de la que reveló el Hong Fan al emperador.

Two centuries bC, the fair emperor Yu the Great crossed and measured with his steps the Nine Mountains, the Nine Rivers and the Nine Marshes and divided the Earth into Nine Regions suitable for virtue and agriculture. He restrained the Waters threatening to flood the Earth and the Sky; historians hold that his division of the human world was revealed to him by a supernatural or angelic Turtle who came from a brook. Some people say that this reptile, the Mother of all Turtles, was made of water and fire; others say she was made of a more uncommon substance: the light of the Sagittarius constellation stars. A cosmic treatise titled Hong Fan (General Rule) or a diagram of the Nine Subdivisions of the treatise made of black and white dots was written in her back.

According to Chinese people, the Sky is hemispheric and the Earth is quadrangular, and that is why they think turtles are an image or model of the universe. Apart from that, turtles are cosmically long-lived; it is only natural that Chinese people think of them as spiritual animals (together with unicorns, dragons, phoenixes and tigers), and the augurs look for omens in their shells.

Than-Qui (wise-turtle) is the name of the turtle who revealed the Hong Fan to the emperor.
